Morning Cup of Murder (A Lacy Steele Mystery, Book 1)

Product Description

After a disastrous few years trying to make it on her own, Lacy Steele returns to her tiny hometown. Feeling like a failure, she moves in with the one person guaranteed to make her fat, her beloved grandmother--a woman who uses food as love. As if to make her already depressing life more confusing, she reconnects with Jason, the former Adonis of their high school. Now a cop, Jason seemingly doesn't remember the frizzy-haired band geek Lacy was. Instead, he sees her as a potential problem, especially when someone she loves is arrested for murder. Lacy won't stop until the murder is solved, even if it means putting herself in danger. Somehow, Lacy is determined to clear a name, put her life back together, and heal old hurts. But more than anything she's determined not to fall in love with Jason Cantor.

I enjoyed the heck out of this book! I thought I had an idea of who the 'bad guy' was, but I was totally wrong. I loved the fact that there were two love interests for Lacy, but I rooted for one over the other (not going to give any spoilers). I found myself liking the main characters and believeing in the story. Its a quick read, or at least for me, but satisfying. I can't wait to see how the romance plays out and what mystery Lacy might find herself in next. Since the title indicates this is Book 1- I hope there is more to come and soon!

I love murder mysteries, so I was pleased to get this on my Kindle for only .99, but even that was a waste of money. Lacy Steele isn't even a very likeable character. For someone who sees herself as a sophisticated former New Yorker, in many ways she still seems like an insecure high school sophomore. Her character vaccilates from tough to blubbering just too much to be believable. She obviously expects former acquaintances to be frozen in time, just as she seems to be. As for the plot, it is weak at best. Too many things just aren't credible, and it seems that the author is really reaching just to come up with a plot. There are also many, many tired stereotypes: senior citizens who ALWAYS eat bran muffins with their coffee, the blustering police detective who won't listen to reason and tries to intimidate everyone else, the mean high school queen who was still mean in her 70's--well, you get the picture. I'm sorry to seem so unsympathetic here, but there was hardly any... Read more

This book is for all those that want a likable character and a read that is satisfying. Lacy is a real woman with doubts and insecurities as well as a huge sweet tooth. No cookie cutter glamozons that are so unrealistic in most books. This book is appealing to real women with real emotions. The reader can instantly connect with the characters and put themselves in their place. If you liked "Confessions of a Shopaholic" and other books with relatable heroins you will love Morning Cup of Murder! Vanessa Bartal can make you forget reality while still being a believable story.
