Competently edited, this novella has an interesting set-up and plot, but the execution of the storyline and its individual scenes are too short to allow the reader time to develop much of an emotional attachment to the central characters. No interesting surprises or twists. The story is as predictable and as carefully controlled as the grammar is neat and tidy. Conflict is all internal (on the heroine's part), not completely explained, and forced at best.Although there are references to Islay (the setting) and Edinburgh, there is no real sense of the actual setting. Dialogue is not colloquial (King's English all the way). While fake or forced Scottish accents in dialogue can be annoying, having none of it at all destroys a reader's sense of place. The actual erotic parts of this story seem...well...not to be mean; forced, fake, and overdone. The prose worked well for me, but I unfortunately lost interest halfway through. I am not calling this book bad, it just could be better. But this is just my opinion. Take it as you will. |
